IGA Urges Government to Support Independent Garages Ahead of Autumn Budget
Ahead of tomorrow’s Autumn Budget, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) has written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP, the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, and the Transport Minister Louise Haigh, calling on the Government to address the urgent needs of the UK’s independent garage sector.
“The Autumn Budget presents an important opportunity to relieve the cost pressures limiting growth across the independent garage sector, which plays an essential role in the UK economy,” said Stuart James, IGA Chief Executive.
“The stagnation of the MOT fee, which has remained unchanged since 2010 despite rising operational costs, is a significant concern. Without adjustments, these businesses face increasing financial strain, making it increasingly difficult to invest in people, equipment, and sustainable practices. Imposing such burdens undermines confidence among garage owners, potentially jeopardising their readiness to meet the government’s Net Zero ambitions.”
“We encourage the government to continue prioritising policies that stimulate consumer spending, as this boosts economic activity across sectors. Furthermore, it is crucial for the Government to understand how to better utilise the Apprenticeship Levy following the recent reform announced in the King’s Speech. Making the Levy more accessible to small businesses like independent garages would significantly enhance workforce development.”
Stuart James concluded: “The IGA will continue engaging with the government to ensure that the voices of independent garages are heard, advocating for recognition of their vital contributions to the UK economy and on behalf of our members.”
