IGA Highlights Shortfall of Support for Independent Garages in Autumn Budget

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has reviewed the measures announced in today’s Autumn Budget by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves. While the decision to fully fund apprenticeships for under-25s in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is a welcome and positive step, much of the remaining Budget provides limited reassurance for independent garages across the sector.

Beyond the apprenticeship announcement, the Budget offers little meaningful support for SMEs. Independent garages continue to face rising costs, tightening margins and increasing regulatory complexity, yet today’s measures do not deliver the assistance or relief they urgently need.

Questions also persist around electric vehicle (EV) policy. Although the Government has committed further investment to support EV infrastructure and adoption, the introduction of EV “pay-per-mile” taxation represents a clear setback, undermining consumer confidence and creating additional uncertainty for businesses preparing for an electric future. Clear, consistent policy is essential, yet today’s message remains mixed.

The announced 2% increase in tax for landlords’ dividends and savings represents an additional financial strain, both for garage businesses that rent their premises and for owners who pay dividends to themselves. These changes add to wider cost pressures at a time when many independent garages are already working hard to maintain stable cashflow in unpredictable trading conditions.

The rise in the National Minimum Wage may not directly affect every independent garage, however, it will have a knock-on effect across staffing costs, supply chains and associated costs, adding further pressure to businesses already contending with higher energy bills, equipment costs and insurance premiums.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “While the commitment to making under-25 apprenticeships free for SMEs is a step in the right direction, the rest of the Budget feels ambiguous and offers little real-world support for independent garages. The negative impact of EV pay-per-mile proposals, rising operational costs, and higher taxes on savings and dividends create yet more challenges. The Government must commit to clearer, more supportive measures.”

Ongoing examination of the Budget is underway to assess its full impact on independent garages.

The IGA will continue to work with government to advocate for practical, targeted policies that recognise the vital contribution of independent garages to the UK’s automotive ecosystem and ensure businesses have the stability needed to invest, grow and serve their communities.

Ben launches Christmas lifeline on World Kindness Day

Today is World Kindness Day and Ben, the automotive industry charity, is launching its Christmas Families project which is a lifeline for automotive families as Christmas is fast approaching. The project runs until 15th December 2025.

In its sixth year, the project provides financial, emotional and wellbeing support for automotive people and their families who are struggling to make ends meet, during the festive period. In the lead up to Christmas Ben can help eligible families with the following:

  • Food costs – making sure no-one goes without food over the coming weeks, and that each family has a festive meal on the table
  • Financial support – to ease the burden of household bills or essential household items
  • Emotional and wellbeing support – offering a listening ear and guidance during what can be a challenging time of year
  • Gifts under the tree – families with children will receive a voucher to buy a Christmas gift, so that every child will receive a gift to help make their Christmas feel extra special. Ben will also provide an extra gift for all children.

Since Christmas 2020, Ben has supported almost 900 adults and children through the project, bringing hope and relief during one of the most financially difficult times of year. With the cost of living continuing to put pressure on households, Ben anticipates even more families could benefit from this initiative. Here are some quotes from families who Ben supported last year…

“Your support has been invaluable during such a challenging time for our family. Receiving Ben’s Christmas families support has truly touched our hearts. The e-vouchers for Christmas dinner and gifts for the children will make a world of difference to us this holiday season.”

“Thank you so much for the vouchers, it genuinely means a lot, and we’ll make sure we have a lovely Christmas thanks to Ben.”

“Thank you so much for the vouchers, it will make a massive difference to our Christmas. It’s been a really hard year, but this will lift the whole family. We’re grateful we can spend it together and now have special treats to make it more special than a normal day.”

Again, this year, we are proud to work in partnership with The BMTA Trust which is supporting this project.

Claire France, Support Services Lead at Ben, said: “Christmas should be a time of joy and togetherness, but for many families it can be incredibly stressful when finances are stretched. Through our Christmas Families Project, we’re here to make sure automotive families are supported and don’t have to face these challenges alone. Whether it’s help putting food on the table, ensuring children have presents to open, or offering emotional support, Ben is here to help make this Christmas a little brighter.”

Ben is encouraging anyone working (or who has worked) in the automotive industry who is worried about making ends meet this Christmas to reach out for support.

If you, or someone you know, works in the automotive industry and needs help this Christmas, Ben is here and we urge you to get in touch now via our free and confidential helpline. Don’t suffer in silence, contact our helpline: 08081 311 333 or use our webchat at www.ben.org.uk.

Protecting your business with Cyber Insurance

Modern independent garages are no longer just mechanical workshops. They are increasingly digital operations. From diagnostics and cloud-based booking systems to customer databases and electronic payments, technology has transformed garage work. While this brings efficiency, it also creates new risks.

Cybercrime is growing and no longer only targets large corporations. Independent garages face threats such as:

  • Ransomware attacks that lock systems until a fee is paid
  • Data breaches exposing customer details
  • Phishing scams targeting staff
  • Service disruptions halting operations

A single cyber incident can cause costly downtime, legal liabilities, and reputational damage.

Cyber insurance provides essential protection, including:

  • Incident response costs to fix breaches
  • Data recovery and notification for affected customers
  • Business interruption coverage for lost income
  • Liability protection for legal costs

This safety net helps garages recover quickly and sustain operations without crippling losses.

For an independent garage, a cyberattack is more than a technical problem, it’s a business crisis. Cyber insurance safeguards against financial loss, reputational harm, and operational disruption, allowing garage owners to focus on serving customers.

Technology is central to the modern garage, but it comes with cyber risks. Cyber insurance is no longer optional. It’s a vital tool for protecting your business, ensuring resilience, and securing your future.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring our members receive the best possible support, service and value, RMI Insurance Services exists to give members access to insurance solutions tailored specifically for the motor trade.

Our team understands the needs of independent garages and can guide you to the right cover for your business, ensuring peace of mind so you can focus on what matters most.

Independent Garage Association joins forces with IPO to protect motorists and garages from counterfeit vehicle parts

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is proud to continue its work with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in supporting the national ‘Fake Always Breaks’ campaign, which highlights the dangers of counterfeit vehicle parts and the importance of vigilance across the motor trade.

The recent seizure of over £100,000 worth of fake automotive components in South Gloucestershire, including spark plugs, filters and sensors, underscores why this ongoing collaboration is so vital. The discovery demonstrates the persistent threat posed by counterfeit vehicle parts to both motorists and the independent garages that serve them.

Counterfeit parts are often made from inferior materials and do not undergo the rigorous safety testing required of genuine components. As a result, they are far more likely to fail, putting drivers, passengers and other road users at serious risk.

The IGA continues to work closely with the IPO to raise awareness across the independent garage sector, ensuring that workshops can identify, report, and avoid counterfeit vehicle parts. Through regular communications, guidance and educational resources, the IGA is helping members remain vigilant when sourcing and fitting parts, particularly as demand increases during the busy winter service season.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “This recent seizure is a stark reminder of the risks counterfeit parts pose to motorists and garages alike. Independent workshops are on the frontline of vehicle safety, and it’s vital they have the knowledge and tools to protect their customers.

“Our ongoing work with the Intellectual Property Office as part of the ‘Fake Always Breaks’ campaign is helping raise awareness across the independent garage sector. By staying alert to the risks and sourcing only from trusted suppliers, garages can safeguard their customers, their businesses, and Britain’s roads.”

The IGA is urging all independent garages to familiarise themselves with the IPO’s guidance on how to spot and report counterfeit parts. Warning signs include vague product descriptions, poor-quality packaging, missing safety information, and unfamiliar or misspelled branding.

Minister Confirms MOT Fee Review Following IGA Campaign

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Transport (DfT) that it is reviewing the MOT test fee and will consult with stakeholders later this year.

The announcement follows sustained engagement between the IGA and the Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood MP, highlighting the growing financial pressures on independent garages caused by the long-standing static MOT fee amid rising operational costs.

In her correspondence, the Minister acknowledged the vital role independent garages play in delivering safety-critical MOT testing and committed to maintaining an open dialogue with the IGA as the review progresses.

Stuart James, CEO of the IGA, said: “We are pleased that the Minister has recognised the invaluable contribution of independent garages and that the Department for Transport is now actively reviewing the MOT fee structure. The current system places unsustainable pressure on businesses that are essential to maintaining road safety across the UK.

This review represents a crucial opportunity to secure a fairer, more sustainable framework for MOT testing that reflects the real costs faced by garages. We will continue to work closely with the Minister to ensure our members’ voices are heard and that this consultation leads to meaningful change.”

The IGA has provided extensive evidence to the DfT on the impact of the static MOT fee and will remain fully engaged throughout the consultation process to advocate for a fair and sustainable future for the independent garage sector.

Ben gears up for second ‘Race Across Britain’ challenge in 2026 to raise vital funds

Automotive industry charity, Ben, is launching its second Race Across Britain challenge – the exhilarating, three-day racing challenge across the UK is back, inspired by BBC TV series, Race Across the World.

Teams of two will take on a high-octane journey, navigating the route and relying on public transport, walking, cycling and their ability to adapt in the moment. Race Across Britain, returns in February 2026 and is set to be just as frenetic and fun, with no planes, no smartphones and no pre-planning.

Following the triumphant debut of Race Across Britain in 2024 which raised £100,000, this unique event tests the grit, creativity and teamwork of automotive industry people and raises vital funds for those who are struggling, or in crisis.

Take on Race Across Britain 2026
Find out more and sign up: www.ben.org.uk/RAB26

With a limited budget for essentials and no checkpoints revealed in advance, it’s a race where ingenuity and resilience count more than speed. Along the way, teams can complete impromptu tasks and challenges to top up their funds, but the clock is always ticking.

Matt Wigginton, Director of Growth & Development at Ben, said: “We can’t wait to race again next year. As Race Across Britain revs up for 2026, our automotive family is called once more to test their mettle, support their colleagues and champion the charity that’s there when they need it most.

Race Across Britain is full of fun, frenetic and wildly rewarding and it’s a celebration of our community’s creativity and competitive spirit. Every mile clocked up, every checkpoint reached and every pound raised matters. Whenever any member of our automotive family is struggling, we rally, and Race Across Britain shows just how far we’ll go to support each other. We hope you’ll get involved and help us change, and even save, lives.”

Whenever any member of our automotive family is struggling, or in crisis, we all rally to support.

Independent Garage Association urges Automotive Businesses to act now ahead of SERMI rollout

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is calling on businesses across the UK automotive sector to register early for the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme, following last week’s announcement of its forthcoming launch.

SERMI is set to transform the way security-related vehicle data is accessed, ensuring that a wide range of independent professionals, not only garages, can compete on equal terms with franchised dealerships for the first time.

We anticipate the scheme will go live later this year, with a high volume of applications expected once the system opens. Businesses that register now will be among the first to gain access, helping them avoid delays and secure a competitive edge. Importantly, no fees will be taken until the system is live, and while not every manufacturer is guaranteed to be onboard at the initial stages SERMI will continue to expand over time.

Benefits for the wider sector

  • Independent garages that meet the compliance standard will gain direct, streamlined access to security-related data such as key coding, ECU programming and software downloads.
  • Automotive locksmiths will be able to carry out professional, secure key services with fewer barriers.
  • Remote Service Suppliers will be able to support garages with remote diagnostics in a more streamlined way.
  • Diagnostic specialists will save time and reduce costs by using a single certification to access multiple manufacturer systems.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said, “In addition to independent garages, SERMI represents a fundamental shift for the entire aftermarket. By providing fair, secure and consistent access to vital vehicle data, it ensures that businesses of all sizes and specialisms can thrive in a rapidly changing sector. Those who act now and complete their registration will be the first to benefit once the scheme goes live.”

The IGA has campaigned for fair access to manufacturer data since 2009, and now, with SERMI set to launch, the association stresses that preparation is key. Businesses that register early will not only avoid delays but will also be well-placed to deliver professional, compliant services from day one.

Ben calls on automotive family to get ready and spread festive cheer through Christmas fundraising activities

Today, Ben is inviting its automotive family to get ready and spread festive cheer by signing up to Christmas Jumper Day and sending Ben Christmas cards, which raise vital funds in support of those struggling or in crisis.

Ben is cranking up festivities this winter by inviting the whole automotive community to get involved in its Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 12 December, or any day that month. Participants simply sign up, wear their most dazzling (or delightfully dreadful) Christmas jumper, round up colleagues and collect a £3 donation per person – the cost of a coffee. It’s the perfect opportunity to get together, have some festive fun and spark change for industry colleagues facing hardship.

For over 35 years, Ben has also been selling its unique, motor-themed Christmas cards, some of which are designed by renowned motoring artist, Richard Wheatland. There is a new automotive design for 2025 to appeal to avid Wheatland collectors and new buyers alike. In addition, Ben’s shop is selling e-cards and Christmas essentials like wrapping paper and tags.

Cost-of-living pressures continue to bite and, this winter, there will be many families worried about keeping the roof over their heads, heat in their homes and putting food on the table. By donning a festive knit on Christmas Jumper Day and sending Ben Christmas cards, you will be spreading festive cheer while giving hope to those struggling in our automotive family. Funds raised will also bring gifts to go under the tree and put smiles on faces this Christmas.

Matt Wigginton, Director of Growth & Development, said: “We can’t wait to start the festivities and we hope our whole automotive family will get involved! Why not turn your office into a festive spectacle for the day; run a competition for the tackiest jumper or ‘most creative knit selfie’; or raffle a Ben bear to raise vital funds. Christmas Jumper Day is such an easy one to get involved in and it helps everyone to get into the festive spirit.

“Also, by sending Ben Christmas cards, you’re raising awareness about Ben, as well as raising funds. Fundraising has never been more important for us – it’s still really tough out there and thousands of people in our automotive family urgently need us. Together, we can make a life-changing, often life-saving, difference to the lives of our automotive family so please get involved today.”

Ben also wants to ensure automotive people know they can turn to Ben if they need support.

The charity is here for automotive industry people this winter so if you work, or have worked, in the automotive industry we urge you to get in touch now if you’re at breaking point via our free and confidential helpline. Don’t suffer in silence, contact our helpline: 08081 311 333 or use our webchat at www.ben.org.uk.

When any member of our automotive family is struggling or in crisis, we all rally to support them.
