What last year’s disruption at JLR meant for the health and wellbeing of automotive people

By Rachel Clift, CEO at Ben, the automotive industry charity

There’s no doubt that last year’s cyber-attack on Jaguar Land Rover created a lot of disruption and uncertainty across the UK automotive sector. While the operational impact was widely reported, at Ben, we heard directly from people who were feeling anxious about income, job security, and what the future might hold.

Unexpected external events like this tend to highlight and worsen pressures that have already been building quietly in the background.

For several years, we’ve seen that stress is the number one health and wellbeing issue affecting people who work in the automotive industry. Over half of automotive workers tell us they are experiencing stress, and many say they are not getting enough time to rest and recover properly[1]. These figures reflect an industry that has been operating at a pace for a long time.

And automotive is not alone. Across the UK, work-related stress, anxiety, and depression account for more than half of all work-related ill health cases, with millions of working days lost each year. Sickness absence linked to mental health is at its highest level in over a decade. These are challenges facing employers in every sector.

However, the automotive industry faces a unique combination of pressures. The pace of technological change can be relentless. Electrification, automation, software-led vehicles, and AI are reshaping roles at speed. For many people, that has meant constant upskilling and the underlying fear of becoming obsolete if they fail to keep up. Even a positive transformation can feel demanding when it’s continuous.

At the same time, many businesses are managing tight margins, supply chain disruption, and rising costs. That has a knock-on effect, causing heavier workloads and longer hours for workers. In our conversations with people across the industry, from apprentices and technicians to senior leaders, concerns about work-life balance, fatigue, and financial strain are increasingly common.

Financial wellbeing, in particular, is closely linked to mental health. A significant proportion of automotive workers tell us they are worried about money, and some are making difficult day-to-day choices as a result. When people are concerned about paying bills or supporting their families, it naturally affects their focus, resilience, and overall health and wellbeing. Nearly one in six automotive workers have told us that they are skipping meals due to money worries[2] and a majority say they are concerned about their financial situation.

It was against this backdrop that the JLR disruption occurred. For some individuals and businesses, particularly smaller suppliers, it added another layer of uncertainty and worry. This was because many people were already managing high levels of stress, pressure and worries about their finances.

Shocks and disruption are undoubtedly part of modern-day business. Whether driven by economic conditions, technological change, or global events, further challenges are likely to arise. The important question for all of us is how we improve resilience so that people are better supported when pressure rises.

Too often, stress and burnout are framed as individual issues. In reality, they are influenced by workload, culture, financial wellbeing and the wider, complex external landscape people are navigating. Supporting health and wellbeing is about creating the conditions in which people can perform and thrive – now and for the long-term.

Encouragingly, we know that early, proactive support makes a real difference. Organisations that have open conversations, are inclusive, monitor employee workload, promote healthy recovery time, and support financial wellbeing tend to see stronger engagement, lower absence, and improved productivity. This is a practical investment in long-term performance, not just a ‘nice to have’.

At Ben, our role is to support individuals and work alongside employers across the automotive industry to build awareness of the services and tools we provide and encourage a more preventative approach. Early intervention is so important. Employee health and wellbeing shouldn’t only be a focus during a crisis; it needs to be part of how a business operates day-to-day.

Automotive has always been defined by innovation and resilience. Applying that same long-term thinking to the health and wellbeing of automotive workers is essential. When we look after the people who power this sector and drive it forward, we strengthen the whole industry – and that can only be a good thing for us all.

Last year’s disruption at JLR can be seen as an important reminder of how connected the automotive ecosystem is and how an unexpected event can affect a sector that is already under strain. It also shows how important it is to put support in place for automotive people. If we want a competitive, innovative, and sustainable automotive sector, we need to continue prioritising the health and wellbeing of the people who are the driving force behind it.

SERMI Now Live: A Momentous Day for Independent Garages

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) today confirms that the SERMI scheme is now officially live in the UK, marking a defining moment for the independent garage sector.

After 17 years of sustained effort to secure fair access to essential vehicle data, today marks the point where that ambition becomes reality.

From this moment, independent garages that meet the required standards can access security-related repair and maintenance information through a secure, manufacturer-recognised framework, something that has long been out of reach.

This is not simply the launch of a scheme, it is the delivery of a long-fought industry objective that fundamentally changes how independent garages operate within a modern vehicle parc.

As vehicles have become more complex and increasingly governed by security-controlled systems, access to critical information has become essential for carrying out complete and professional repairs. SERMI establishes, for the first time, a trusted and regulated route to that access, supporting both consumer choice and the independent sector.

The UK stands alone as the only country outside the European Union to achieve full approval and implementation of SERMI, reflecting the scale of coordination and determination required to reach this point.

The scheme goes live with strong manufacturer backing, including Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford and Peugeot, contributing to a total of 22 brands now committed in the UK. This level of support ensures that SERMI is not only operational from day one, but meaningful in practice.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said: “Today matters. This is the point where years of work, challenge and persistence deliver something tangible for independent garages across the UK.

SERMI changes the position of the independent sector. It gives professional, compliant businesses access to the information they need to repair modern vehicles properly, safely, and legitimately.

It also sends a clear message about the capability and standards within our sector. Garages that achieve SERMI approval are demonstrating that they meet a recognised, trusted benchmark, one that is supported by manufacturers and understood across Europe.

We are proud to have led this work in the UK and to have reached this stage. Our focus is now on supporting garages that wish to engage with the scheme and helping the benefits reach the wider sector.”

The IGA has worked in close partnership with government, European bodies and industry stakeholders to bring SERMI into operation in the UK, including securing access to the European Trust Centre and establishing the framework required for UK businesses.

With the scheme now live, attention turns to adoption. Garages are encouraged to begin the onboarding process, with requirements including DBS checks and application lead times forming part of the approval process.

The IGA will continue to support the sector as SERMI becomes embedded, ensuring garages are informed, prepared, and able to take full advantage of what is now in place.

This marks a significant step forward for the independent sector, one that strengthens its position, supports its future, and reflects the standards it continues to uphold.

IGA Applauds IPO’s Ongoing Fight Against Counterfeit Vehicle Parts

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has welcomed news from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) that funding will continue for the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), recognising the IPO’s ongoing commitment to tackling intellectual property crime and protecting consumers.

The announcement confirms that the specialist City of London Police unit will continue to receive funding for a further three years. The IGA believes the IPO’s continued support for this work is vital in disrupting criminal networks selling counterfeit goods and protecting legitimate businesses across a range of sectors, including automotive.

For independent garages, the issue of counterfeit and unverified vehicle parts remains a growing concern. Such components can present serious safety risks to motorists and create challenges for responsible repairers committed to maintaining the highest standards.

The IGA has worked with the IPO over a number of years to raise awareness of counterfeit vehicle parts and those sourced outside recognised supply chains, highlighting the dangers they pose to both garages and consumers.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the Independent Garage Association, said, ‘We welcome the Intellectual Property Office’s continued commitment to supporting the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit and the crucial work it undertakes. Counterfeit and unapproved vehicle parts pose a genuine risk to motorists and create challenges for independent garages that are prioritising safety and quality.

‘The IPO’s leadership in tackling intellectual property crime and supporting enforcement activity is essential in protecting consumers and legitimate businesses. It also helps address the growing issue of customer-supplied parts, which too often originate from unknown sources.’

The IGA will continue working with the IPO to raise awareness of the risks associated with counterfeit parts or parts of unknown provenance, while encouraging motorists to use trusted garages and high-quality, traceable components.

IGA Highlights Ongoing Pressures on Independent Garages Following Spring Statement

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has responded to the Chancellor’s Spring Statement, noting that while the update focused primarily on economic forecasts rather than new fiscal measures, significant pressures remain for independent garages across the UK.

With no new targeted support for small businesses or the automotive industry announced, the IGA says the sector continues to operate in a challenging environment marked by rising employment costs and investment demands.

Independent garages are the backbone of the UK’s vehicle repair and maintenance sector and continue to navigate higher wage costs, ongoing business rate concerns and the need to invest in new technologies to service increasingly complex vehicles, including electric and hybrid models.

Jon Douglass, Director of the IGA said, ‘While today’s Spring Statement did not introduce new measures directly affecting independent garages, it does little to ease the very real cost pressures our members continue to face.

Independent garages are vital to keeping the nation’s motorists safe and mobile. They are small businesses embedded in their local communities, employing skilled technicians and investing in new equipment to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving vehicle parc.

As we look ahead to the Autumn Budget, the IGA urges the Government to recognise the essential role our sector plays and to consider targeted support around business rates, skills investment and capital allowances. Supporting independent garages ultimately underpins UK mobility and road safety, benefiting millions of motorists across the country.’

The IGA also noted that wider economic uncertainty and continued pressure on household finances may increase price sensitivity among motorists, reinforcing the importance of a competitive and accessible independent garage sector.

The association will continue engaging with policymakers to ensure the voice of independent garages is heard ahead of future fiscal events.

SERMI Launches with Rigorous, Credible Security Standards

With SERMI set to go live in the UK on 1st April, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) and Digidentity are highlighting the rigorous security framework that underpins the scheme.

Both businesses and individual technicians must undergo stringent background checks before they can access security-related repair and maintenance information. This includes formal identity verification, criminal record checks, business validation, and ongoing compliance requirements. Only once these standards are met is a secure ‘digital passport’ issued, confirming that the garage and named technicians are authorised to work on protected vehicle systems such as immobilisers, key coding, and secure ECU functions.

Digidentity, a leading European digital identity specialist, is the UK Trust Centre responsible for carrying out these comprehensive checks. With extensive experience in digital identity verification and regulatory compliance across Europe, Digidentity provides the independent, secure infrastructure that forms the foundation of the UK’s SERMI implementation.

A significant number of UK independent garages have already successfully completed the full application and verification process. These businesses are accredited and ready to operate from the 1st April, demonstrating both the sector’s commitment to compliance and its readiness to embrace higher security standards.

For consumers, the introduction of SERMI provides meaningful reassurance. Research and industry commentary increasingly point to growing public concern around vehicle data security and transparency in repair processes. By requiring enhanced identity assurance and strict operational checks, SERMI-accredited garages visibly demonstrate that they meet recognised, independently verified security standards.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said, ‘Security is the foundation of SERMI. This is not simply about access to information, it’s about demonstrating that independent garages and their technicians meet the highest standards of integrity, identity assurance, and accountability. Working alongside Digidentity as the UK Trust Centre ensures that the verification process is robust, independent, and aligned with European best practice. The independent sector is showing it is fully prepared to operate within one of the most secure access frameworks our industry has ever seen, giving manufacturers and motorists complete confidence that sensitive vehicle data is handled responsibly.’

Marcel Wendt, Founder and CTO of Digidentity, added, ‘The launch of SERMI in the UK marks a pivotal shift toward a more secure and transparent automotive landscape. As the UK Trust Centre, Digidentity is proud to provide the rigorous verification infrastructure that makes this possible. Our role is to ensure that every ‘digital passport’ issued is backed by the highest standards of identity and business validation.

By successfully navigating this stringent process, the UK’s independent garages are proving their commitment to professional integrity. We are not just facilitating access to data; we are building a foundation of trust that protects technicians, manufacturers, and, most importantly, the motorists who rely on them.’

The IGA and Digidentity will continue to support garages through the application and onboarding process, ensuring that security, transparency, and consumer confidence remain central to the UK’s new operating landscape.

From 1st April, SERMI will not only unlock access, it will set a new benchmark for secure, accountable independent vehicle repair in the UK.

Business Interruption Insurance: Is your Garage Adequately Protected?

Most independent garages insure their buildings and equipment, but fewer fully review their Business Interruption cover. This section is designed to protect your income if a major insured event, such as a fire, stops you trading, yet many policies only include a 12-month indemnity period, which is often not enough.

What is Business Interruption Insurance?

Business Interruption cover protects your business profits and ongoing expenses following an insured material damage claim. It helps cover costs such as wages, rent, and other financial commitments while your garage recovers.

Why it’s Important

  • Recovery takes longer than expected – After a serious fire, it can take 6-8 months just to clear the site before rebuilding begins. A 12-month indemnity period may end before you are fully operational again.
  • Getting back to normal takes time – Even once you reopen, trading levels may not immediately return to where they were before the loss. Business Interruption cover is designed to support you until the business reaches its previous level of turnover.
  • Adequate sums insured matter – The limit of indemnity should include all ongoing expenses and projected business growth, not just current costs. This cover only applies following an insured material damage claim, so ensuring the limits and indemnity period are sufficient is essential.

Business Interruption is one of the most commonly under-insured areas. In many cases, increasing cover from a 12-month to a 24-month indemnity period, and reviewing the financial limits, makes only a negligible difference to premium but can provide significantly greater protection if the worst happens.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring our members receive the best possible support, service and value, RMI Insurance Services was established as our wholly owned insurance brokerage, providing insurance solutions tailored specifically for the motor trade.

Our team understands the needs of independent garages and can help ensure your cover truly reflects your business.

Why Directors Insurance Matters for Independent Garages

Running an independent garage today means juggling far more than repairs and customer service. Directors and business owners are also navigating a complex mix of health & safety rules, employment laws, and financial responsibilities. With so many moving parts, Directors’ and Officers’ (D&O) insurance is becoming an essential part of protecting not just the business, but the people behind it.

What is D&O Insurance?

D&O insurance protects directors and senior decision-makers from personal liability if they’re accused of mismanagement, negligence, or breaching their duties. Claims can come from employees, customers, suppliers, or regulators.

Without it, your personal assets, such as your home or savings, could be at risk if a claim is made against you.

Why it’s Important

  • You are personally accountable – Even small garages face risks if someone takes legal action over a management decision. Directors can be named personally in claims involving finances, contracts, or HR issues.
  • Regulatory pressures are rising – With strict rules on health & safety, waste disposal, and consumer protection, it’s easy for a minor oversight to trigger an investigation. D&O insurance helps cover defence and legal costs, even if you’ve done nothing wrong.
  • Employment disputes can escalate – Allegations of unfair dismissal, discrimination, or harassment can be costly and stressful. Many D&O policies include employment practices liability, offering vital protection.

For independent garages, Directors’ and Officers’ insurance isn’t a luxury, it’s a layer of protection for those making key decisions. It ensures one legal claim doesn’t put your business or personal finances on the line, letting you focus on what really matters: keeping your customers safely on the road.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring our members receive the best possible support, service and value, RMI Insurance Services was established as our wholly owned insurance brokerage giving members access to insurance solutions tailored specifically for the motor trade.

Our team understands the needs of independent garages and can guide you to the right cover for your business, ensuring peace of mind so you can focus on what matters most.

SERMI Goes Live in the UK: A New Era for Independent Garages

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has confirmed that the European SERMI scheme will officially go live in the UK on 1st April, marking a historic breakthrough for independent garages nationwide.

After 17 years of persistent effort, advocacy, and collaboration, this launch represents the moment when independent garages can finally access secure, security-related vehicle repair and maintenance information through the SERMI framework, unlocking opportunities that were previously difficult to reach.

The UK is the only country outside the European Union to achieve both approval and implementation of SERMI, cementing the IGA’s role as the leading representative of independent garages and fair competition in an increasingly complex automotive landscape.

SERMI provides a trusted, secure, and manufacturer-recognised route for independent garages to access data that is essential for working on modern vehicles, including systems relating to security, immobilisation, and advanced electronics. As vehicle technology evolves, this access is critical to maintaining consumer choice and the long-term viability of the independent garage sector.

The IGA has collaborated closely with the UK Government, European garage bodies, vehicle manufacturers, and the European SERMI Board. This included securing access to the European SERMI Trust Centre to meet UK-specific regulatory and operational requirements.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the Independent Garage Association, said, ‘Reaching full approval was a landmark achievement, but announcing the go-live date is the moment when 17 years of determination finally comes to life for independent garages. From the 1st April, eligible repairers can operate within a trusted, recognised framework that puts independent garages back on a level playing field.

As the SERMI scheme embeds itself within the UK, SERMI is more than access to information. It is a declaration of integrity, capability, and the future of independent repair. Today, independent garages can demonstrate they meet the highest standards, and their role in the UK motor industry has never been stronger.’

The IGA will continue to support garages through onboarding and is advancing further initiatives focused on secure gateway access and cyber security, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of servicing and repairing next-generation vehicles.

A Landmark Moment for Independent Garages: SERMI Approved in the UK

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has announced it has achieved full approval for the European SERMI scheme in the UK, marking a landmark breakthrough for the independent automotive repair sector.

The approval concludes a 17-year programme of work and makes the UK the only country outside of the European Union to gain access to the SERMI framework, which governs secure access to sensitive vehicle security-related repair and maintenance information.

As vehicle technology has advanced, independent garages have faced growing restrictions when accessing the data required to repair modern vehicles. SERMI establishes a formal, trusted and secure pathway, ensuring legitimate independent businesses can continue to operate on a level playing field.

The IGA has invested significantly to develop a bespoke integration of the European SERMI process for the UK, working closely with European garage bodies, manufacturers and the European SERMI Board, including negotiated access to the European SERMI Trust Centre.

Stuart James, Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Garage Association, said: “This has been a 17-year journey, and the scale of this achievement cannot be underestimated. Independent garages have long faced barriers accessing vital security-related vehicle information, and SERMI now provides a recognised, trusted route to that access.

The UK is the only country outside the European Union to secure this approval, and that reflects the IGA’s determination to protect the future of independent repair. For garages, SERMI is not only about access, it also demonstrates integrity, professionalism and provides a clear competitive and marketing advantage.

This is just the beginning. The IGA is continuing its work on additional projects which open the door to secure gateway and cyber security access, positioning the UK to lead the way in repairing the next generation of technically advanced vehicles.”

Ben launches financial wellbeing campaign on Blue Monday as money worries continue to rise for automotive families

Money worries are placing growing strain on automotive families and financial pressure is one of the most significant challenges facing people working in the industry. Automotive industry charity, Ben, continues to support thousands of individuals and their families each year who are struggling to make ends meet.

To highlight the scale of the issue and encourage people to seek help, Ben has launched a new financial wellbeing campaign today, on Blue Monday, a day often associated with low mood and heightened levels of stress. Running across Ben’s channels over the coming weeks, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the support available for those experiencing money worries and the impact that financial pressures can have on physical and mental health, as well as relationships and overall wellbeing.

Support with money
New tips and support available at www.ben.org.uk/money.

Cost-of-living pressures have become an everyday reality for many automotive workers. In recent years, Ben has seen a rise in people needing urgent financial assistance, including help with food, rent, utility bills and vital support to keep a roof over their heads.

Financial stress rarely exists in isolation. Ben is seeing more people facing complex and overlapping challenges, with money worries affecting wider health and wellbeing, both for automotive workers and their family dependants.

The scale of the issue is significant. Ben’s latest survey report revealed that 1 in 6 industry people are skipping meals to save money, and 1 in 5 are experiencing issues with debt[1]. These pressures are adding to everyday stresses and contributing to ongoing mental health challenges across the industry.

This trend reflects a wider national picture. The Financial Wellbeing Index, which surveyed more than 5,000 workers, found that 77% say money worries affect them at work. Financial stress is closely linked to anxiety, low mood and depression, with far-reaching consequences for individuals and families.

Rachel Clift, CEO at Ben, said: “Money worries are one of the most common reasons people reach out to Ben. By launching our financial wellbeing campaign on Blue Monday, we want to remind people across the automotive industry that support is available and that they don’t have to face these challenges alone. Asking for help early can make a huge difference. Don’t delay, get in touch today!

Motor Traders Insurance: Are You Fully Covered?

Insurance is something most independent garages put in place and rarely revisit. But the strength of any policy depends on accurate underwriting. Without it, you may think you are fully protected, only to discover gaps when you need it most.

Underwriting is how insurers assess risk and ensure your policy reflects your business. For independent garages, this is crucial, no two operations are the same. Your services, premises, staff, equipment, and turnover all affect whether your cover is suitable.

Common underwriting issues for garages include:

  • Incorrect or outdated turnover figures
  • Unlisted services such as diagnostics, EV or hybrid work
  • Changes to premises or security not declared
  • High-value tools, an employee’s own tools, garage equipment or customer vehicles underinsured
  • Employers’ liability not reflecting actual staff numbers

If these details are wrong or incomplete, claims may be reduced or even declined. Proper underwriting ensures your policy accurately reflects how your garage operates. Assets, tools and customer vehicles are insured for their true value, liability cover matches your real exposure, and claims are handled smoothly without unexpected disputes

As businesses evolve, underwriting must evolve with them. Taking on new services, investing in new equipment, expanding premises, or hiring additional staff can all affect your risk profile. Regular reviews are essential to ensure your cover keeps pace with change.

Another critical factor many garages overlook is the condition of Average. If a business is underinsured, insurers may apply Average, reducing a claim proportionately.

For example, if machinery is insured for £70,000 but is actually worth £100,000, a fire causing £40,000 in damage would result in a settlement of just £28,000. This reflects the fact that the machinery was insured for only 70% of its true value, leaving the garage £12,000 out of pocket.

This highlights why regularly reviewing sums insured with your broker is vital. Has your broker explained how Average works? Do they routinely review sums insured with you? Taking the time to review your cover can help avoid unexpected shortfalls at claim stage.

For an independent garage, being underinsured is more than an inconvenience. It can result in significant financial loss, business interruption, and long-term damage to your operation. Reviewing your underwriting ensures you are fully protected, properly covered, and not exposed to unnecessary risk.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring our members receive the best possible support, service and value, RMI Insurance Services exists to give members access to insurance solutions tailored specifically for the motor trade.

Our team understands the realities of independent garages and works closely with insurers to ensure your cover is accurately underwritten and fit for purpose.

IGA Commits to Supporting Independent Garages Through Employment Rights Changes

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) supports independent garages as they prepare for the Employment Rights Act 2025, which is now in force. However, the most significant provisions affecting members will be phased in from April 2026.

The legislation brings in new rules covering sick pay, harassment prevention and unfair dismissal rights. While most changes will be phased in from 2026, the IGA has committed to keeping members updated with clear, actionable guidance as details and timelines are confirmed by government.

The Act introduces a number of measures, including day-one access to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) and removes the lower-earnings limit and waiting period, a strengthened employer duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent harassment including by customers and the proposed change to the 2-year unfair dismissal qualifying period, which has not only been pushed back to 1 January 2027, but also reduced to a 6 month qualifying period rather than being abolished entirely.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said, “These are significant changes, but independent garages have time to prepare. Our members need clarity and effective tools. We will continue to urge government to provide fair notice and ensure that consultation processes reflect the needs of our sector. The IGA will be here every step of the way, supplying garages with practical, ready-to-use resources to help them comply with the law as it evolves.”

The IGA currently provides members with a library of essential documents, including sickness policies, recruitment templates and HR forms. These resources will be updated in line with the phased introduction of the Act, beginning in April 2026.

Douglass concluded, “Our priority is to ensure that independent garages are fully supported through this transition. The IGA will provide the insight and guidance our members rely on, enabling them to adapt confidently while continuing to deliver safe, reliable and affordable services to motorists.”

IGA Highlights Shortfall of Support for Independent Garages in Autumn Budget

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has reviewed the measures announced in today’s Autumn Budget by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves. While the decision to fully fund apprenticeships for under-25s in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is a welcome and positive step, much of the remaining Budget provides limited reassurance for independent garages across the sector.

Beyond the apprenticeship announcement, the Budget offers little meaningful support for SMEs. Independent garages continue to face rising costs, tightening margins and increasing regulatory complexity, yet today’s measures do not deliver the assistance or relief they urgently need.

Questions also persist around electric vehicle (EV) policy. Although the Government has committed further investment to support EV infrastructure and adoption, the introduction of EV “pay-per-mile” taxation represents a clear setback, undermining consumer confidence and creating additional uncertainty for businesses preparing for an electric future. Clear, consistent policy is essential, yet today’s message remains mixed.

The announced 2% increase in tax for landlords’ dividends and savings represents an additional financial strain, both for garage businesses that rent their premises and for owners who pay dividends to themselves. These changes add to wider cost pressures at a time when many independent garages are already working hard to maintain stable cashflow in unpredictable trading conditions.

The rise in the National Minimum Wage may not directly affect every independent garage, however, it will have a knock-on effect across staffing costs, supply chains and associated costs, adding further pressure to businesses already contending with higher energy bills, equipment costs and insurance premiums.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “While the commitment to making under-25 apprenticeships free for SMEs is a step in the right direction, the rest of the Budget feels ambiguous and offers little real-world support for independent garages. The negative impact of EV pay-per-mile proposals, rising operational costs, and higher taxes on savings and dividends create yet more challenges. The Government must commit to clearer, more supportive measures.”

Ongoing examination of the Budget is underway to assess its full impact on independent garages.

The IGA will continue to work with government to advocate for practical, targeted policies that recognise the vital contribution of independent garages to the UK’s automotive ecosystem and ensure businesses have the stability needed to invest, grow and serve their communities.
